The Gold-Eyed Surfer living life at full volume

Ash Keillah bounced between Sydney's Northern Beaches, the Gold Coast and the Byron Shire growing up. These days he's right where he belongs — surfing, coaching, raising a family and creating content that's entirely, unmistakably him.

01    Origins

Where did you grow up and what was life like?

I bounced between Sydney's Northern Beaches, The Goldy and The Byron Shire. All epic spots that got the surf stoke at max!

Was there a moment that really shaped who you are today?

That's a tough one, there's been so many moments along the way — but the birth of my son Jaiya, who is now 6, was definitely a game changer. Having little eyes on you 24/7 gives you no choice but to give it your best at everything you do.

What did you think you were going to do before content creation entered the picture?

Anything to do with surfing — whether it be competitive or more the free surfing route. Now getting a little older I feel like I want to splice the content creation with the free surfing aspect.

02    The Gold Eye

People notice your eye straight away — are you comfortable sharing the story?

Absolutely, I train kids so I'm used to the no-hold-back questions! About 15 years ago I was out at an after party, a couple of people got into a scuffle, a glass was thrown at someone else but got me straight in the peeper. I had to wear an eyepatch for a few years while I was getting eye ops and different eyes made — but eventually got the chance to play around and chose what I liked, which of course had to be a lil boujé if you know me. I landed on gold as my fave and the rest is history.

How did it affect you mentally and emotionally — at the time and in the years after?

At the time I thought I dealt with it well — focusing on surfing — but looking back I was kinda shoving it all down until it would come out in different reckless ways. Now? I wouldn't change a bloody thing. I surf better than I did with two eyes, I'm proud with how I carry myself after such a big injury, and I hope it helps people in similar circumstances see that a positive can come out of such a full-on thing. I mean I'm living the dream in Byron with my smoking hot wifey and two beautiful kids, surfing, coaching, training BJJ most days — life's good. If I sat around and got stuck in the poor me mentality I would have missed out on all of this.

Has it ever held you back, or opened doors you wouldn't have expected?

I can't think of a spot where it's really held me back — but it's most definitely given me a point of difference and my own style in the oversaturated content world.

I surf better than I did with two eyes. I wouldn't change a bloody thing.

03    Content Creation

How did you first get into creating content?

It mainly started as a way to get in front of potential sponsors with surfing, but it turned into a weird full-time job along the way. Honestly I don't even know how I got here!

What kind of content do you make, and who is it really for?

It's definitely drifted more into an all-around approach — from surfing, fashion, family, cooking, training, BJJ and travel, which is fun for me because I don't feel too pigeonholed on one subject.

How much of your life is content at this point?

It's definitely all blurred into one thing these days. I try to take content as I go of whatever I'm doing and upload later, but most of the time I end up with a full phone of unposted content!

What's been your proudest moment as a creator so far?

Probably being able to sustain an income and lifestyle for so long. Honestly it still blows my mind that this has become a legit job.

What's the hardest part that people on the outside probably don't see?

Finding balance between being present and making consistent content — for sure.

04    Style & The Partnership

How would you describe your personal style?

I think I can vary between a few styles but I love the clean fits — some oversized tees and a pop of colour here and there. I'm a simple man!

How has working with Mindful Merch changed the way you dress?

Working with Mindful Merch made me appreciate the effort that goes into my clothing a lot more. When you wear a piece you know has the love put in it from start to finish, it just feels different.

What does it mean to you to have a brand backing you?

Working with a brand over a longer period of time is so much better on so many levels — it becomes more natural in the content, we all get to know each other and it becomes a custom collab rather than a generic shill. Plus it's way more fun to get involved and be able to pass ideas back and forth.

Is there a piece you keep coming back to?

There's so many, but one in particular stands out — I got it last winter and it's definitely getting busted out again. The Box Hoodie in tan (don't know the official colour!). From the fit, colour and material it's just a 10/10 piece for me. It easily dresses up or down depending on the occasion.

05    What's Next

Where are you at in life right now?

Right now I'm focusing on my coaching business, content creation, and the long-term goal of owning a boutique training and BJJ gym in Byron Bay.

What's something you want people to remember about you — beyond just the content?

I would love for people to get some inspiration to try new things, keep a smile on your face through adversity and enjoy life a little more. YEW! 🤙
