What Is GOTS Certified Organic Cotton?

If you've been shopping for blank tees or hoodies lately, you've probably seen "GOTS certified" on a few swing tags. It sounds official, and it is. But what does it actually mean, and does it matter for your brand?

Around 90% of what we make at Mindful Merch is GOTS certified organic cotton, so it's something we talk about a lot. Here's the plain English version.

What does GOTS stand for?

GOTS stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard. It's one of the world's leading certifications for textiles made from organic fibres like cotton.

The big difference between GOTS and a simple "organic" claim is that GOTS doesn't stop at the farm. It follows the fibre the whole way through: spinning, knitting, dyeing, finishing, sewing and labelling. Every step in the chain has to be certified, and each certified business is checked by an independent certification body.

What makes cotton organic?

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, and from non genetically modified seed. Farmers use methods like crop rotation and natural pest control to look after the soil instead.

But growing it organically is only half the story. A tee can start as organic cotton and still be processed with harsh chemicals further down the line. That's the gap GOTS closes.

What does GOTS actually check?

1. How much organic fibre is in the product

There are two GOTS label grades:

"Organic": at least 95% certified organic fibres
"Made with organic": at least 70% certified organic fibres

2. The chemicals used to process it

Every dye, finish and processing chemical has to meet strict limits. Toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde and a long list of hazardous substances are banned or tightly restricted. That's better for the people making the fabric, the waterways around the mills, and the skin of whoever ends up wearing your merch.

3. Water and waste

Mills that do wet processing, like dyeing and washing, need proper wastewater treatment in place. They also need environmental policies for how they use energy and handle waste.

4. The people who make it

GOTS includes social criteria based on International Labour Organisation standards. That covers no forced or child labour, safe and hygienic working conditions, freedom to join a union, and fair treatment of workers.

How do you know a GOTS claim is real?

Anyone can print "organic" on a tag, so here's what to look for:

The GOTS logo with a licence number, or the name of the certification body, on the label or product information
A certified supplier: GOTS keeps a public database where you can search for certified companies
A straight answer when you ask a supplier for their certification details

Why it matters for your brand
