FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS GSM?

GSM stands for “grams per square metre” and it is a unit of measurement used to indicate the weight or thickness of a fabric. It is used to measure the weight of a fabric and is an indicator of the fabric’s overall quality. A higher GSM number indicates a thicker or heavier fabric, while a lower GSM number indicates a thinner or lighter fabric.

GSM is used to compare the weight of different types of fabrics and can be used to determine which fabric is best suited for a particular project or garment. For example, a t-shirt fabric will generally have lower GSM than a sweater fabric, as a t-shirt is expected to be lighter and more breathable than a sweater. Similarly, a jacket will generally have higher GSM than a summer dress, as it’s expected to be more heavy and warm.

In general, GSM is a good indicator of the durability of a fabric. Fabrics with a higher GSM are generally more durable and resistant to wear and tear than fabrics with a lower GSM. This is why GSM is an important factor to consider when choosing a fabric for a particular project.

WHAT DOES SINGLES MEAN IN FABRIC?

In the context of fabric, “singles” refers to the number of yarns twisted together to make a single thread or strand. A single yarn is made up of many individual fibres twisted together. The number of fibres in a yarn and the degree of twist applied to them can affect the strength, durability, and appearance of the finished fabric.

When yarns are twisted together to make a thread, the number of yarns twisted together is referred to as the “ply.” For example, a 2-ply yarn is made up of two yarns twisted together, while a 3-ply yarn is made up of three yarns twisted together.

Fabrics made from single yarns are referred to as “singles fabrics.” These fabrics tend to be lightweight, soft and flexible, with a low twist and low-density construction. They are suitable for making light and delicate fabrics such as sheer fabrics and summer wear.

On the other hand, fabrics made from multiple plied yarns are referred to as “plied fabrics.” These fabrics tend to be stronger, more durable, and have a higher twist, they are more suitable for heavy-duty fabrics such as denim and canvas.

WHAT IS A WS/TRADE ACCOUNT AND WHO CAN GET ONE?

Trade pricing is a pricing structure that is offered to specific types of businesses. To be eligible for wholesale/trade pricing, a business must operate within one of the following industries:

  • Printing: This industry includes businesses that specialise in printing services such as screen printing, digital printing, and offset printing.
  • Embroidery: This industry includes businesses that offer embroidery services such as custom embroidery, monogramming, and personalization of garments.
  • Merchandise: This industry includes businesses that sell or distribute merchandise such as clothing, accessories, and promotional items.
  • Uniform: This industry includes businesses that supply uniforms and workwear for various industries such as healthcare, hospitality, and corporate.
  • Promotional: This industry includes businesses that specialise in creating and supplying custom-made promotional products such as branded apparel, bags, and giveaways.

Trade pricing is typically different from retail pricing, as it is meant for businesses that resell the products or use them for their own business purposes. The trade pricing often offers a more competitive price per unit, which allows businesses to purchase products in large quantities at a lower cost.

It’s worth noting that trade pricing is not available for individual consumers, it’s only for businesses that can provide proof of their industry affiliation and purchase the products for commercial use
